What is the purpose of the 30‑Day Walking Challenge and today’s walk intro?

Dave Paul 0:02
We're going to sharpen our thinking a little differently skills. Hi, I'm Dave. Welcome to Walking is Fitness, a daily 10-minute podcast designed to provide you with motivation and encouragement to get out, take the walk, and more importantly, to do it day after day after day, to build a life-lasting, life-changing walking house. Today's ten minute walk starts right after this. I am on my back porch with a box I just got from Topo Athletic. These contain my new shoes. The ST6, these are minimal shoes. Wide toe box, all the Topo Athletic shoes come with a wide toe box. My shoes have a zero drop. This part of a journey I've been on to make my feet stronger, to move towards a more minimal shoe. With Topo Athletic, they've got shoes for every need, minimal shoes, maximal cushion.

They've got road shoes, trail shoes, recovery shoes, race shoes. Alright, let's open the box. And there's a box inside the box, and these are nice looking, and very light, very light. Let's pull the inserts out, try them on. Boy, I can feel the difference the wide toe box makes instantly. By the way, Topo Athletic, brand new sponsor of Walking is Fitness. You can check them out. Again, Topoathletic.com. You can do your shopping online. You can also see where you can pick up Topo shoes at a retailer near you. All right, leaving the back porch. Walking in and yeah, this wide toe box makes a huge difference. So I'm gonna be wearing these and I'll give you an update shortly. In the meantime, check them out, Topo Athletic, T-O-P-O, Topoathletic.com.

Day 11 of the 30-day walking challenge. That is, if you started on June 1st, but if you didn't start on June 1st, it's not too late. You can do this anytime. You can start any day. Really, it's very simple. Number one, make a commitment to walk 10 minutes daily. Number two, download the 30-day fitness chain tracker. It's a one-sheet.

How do the new Topo Athletic shoes and their wide toe box affect the walk?

Dave Paul 2:19
Free, you print it, put it someplace where you can see it, like on a refrigerator. It's got 30 shoe prints that are connected together. Every day you take the walk, the 10-minute walk, you color in a shoe print as that chain grows. It provides added motivation to get out and take the walk. Some are doing it every day, they don't want to break the chain. But if you miss a day or two or five, no worries. You simply reframe the challenge and it's as many days as possible over the course of 30 days. And then number three, listen to this podcast every day for added encouragement to keep going because this is a hard thing. Building a habit that lasts that is consistent is really, really hard. I'm taking a 10-minute walk.
Dave Paul 3:09
Every day, I record the podcast as I'm walking. You listen as you're walking, it's a reminder that you're not doing this alone. Lily writes, Good morning, Dave. I wanted to extend my gratitude to you. I'm a 27-year-old who's found themselves in a work-from-home sedentary job. I do not have any physical ailment ailments keeping me from walking, but it is the mind that. Creates friction. Your simple 10 minutes, anywhere you can walk, has helped me break down the barriers I've created for myself and get out of my own way. Before, I would get in the car, drive to a trail, walk more than 30 minutes, and then come back home. This routine was something that came and went too quickly, then I'd like to admit. I know the effects of a desk job, so I understand the importance of walking, but I couldn't keep a consistent routine.
Dave Paul 4:07
That was then. Now I walk out to my apartment complex's parking lot, start my 10-minute timer, and walk in circles. It's nothing big. Normally 10 minutes is all I have to give. It's not a 30-plus minute walk on a nice trail, but it is seven days a week. It's amazing the obstacles your brain builds. And it takes someone else for you to realize, oh, I guess it really is that simple. I can do anything for ten minutes. Much gratitude to you, Lily. Lily, thank you. Thanks for writing. Thanks for your encouragement and thanks for your wisdom. Carol, I'm ready for this 30-day challenge. There are many reasons why, but primarily as I get older, my joints need the daily movement so that in my later years I'm not suffering with moving.
