What is “movement is medicine” and why is walking presented as a cure?

Dave Paul 0:02
Have you ever heard the term movement is medicine? Today I want to talk about one of the powerful benefits of walking as medicine. Hi, I'm Dave. Welcome to Walking is Fitness, a daily 10 minute podcast designed to provide you with a little added motivation to get out the door and take the walk. Today's 10 minute walk starts right after this. I am on my back porch with a box I just got from Topo Athletic. These contain my new shoes, the ST6. These are minimal shoes, wide toe box. All the Topo Athletic shoes come with a wide toe box. My shoes have a zero drop. This is part of a journey I've been on to make my feet stronger, to move towards a more minimal shoe. With Topo Athletic, they've got shoes for every need.

Minimal shoes, maximal cushion. They've got road shoes, trail shoes, recovery shoes, race shoes. All right, let's open the box. And there's a box inside the box and these are nice looking and very light, very light. Let's pull the inserts out, try them on. Boy, I can feel the difference the wide toe box makes instantly. By the way, Topo Athletic, brand new sponsor of Walking is Fitness. You can check them out.

How do the new Topo Athletic ST6 shoes differ from regular trainers?

Dave Paul 1:21
Again, topoathletic.com. You can do your shopping online. You can also see where you can pick up Topo shoes at a retailer near you. All right, leaving the back porch. Walking in and yeah, this wide toe box makes a huge difference. So I'm going to be wearing these and I'll give you an update shortly. In the meantime, check them out. The days are longer, the calendar is filling up, and I want to feel as good as this beautiful summer weather. That's why I've been loving Groons. It's one daily pack of gummies that covers my greens, vitamins, and minerals, and even has six grams of prebiotic fiber. So I don't need to juggle a complicated wellness routine on top of everything else. They taste amazing. They're easy to toss in my bag on the go. Plus they're vegan, gluten-free and HSA FSA eligible for reimbursement. Save up to 52% off with promo code podcast at grooms.co that's code podcast at G R U N S dot C O.

Today I want to talk about a benefit of walking that I've not personally experienced, but I've had a front row seat watching someone else experience this. And because of that, because of what I've seen, I want to talk about some lessons that I've learned about the best way to use walking as medicine in this particular way. So we're going to start with a comment from a Walking is Fitness YouTube viewer. The video is titled, The Mind-Bending Benefits of a Slow Walk. And here's the comment. I've had the super flu for four weeks. I'm battling to get back into my daily walks. Interestingly, or maybe ironically, one of the benefits of a slow walk that I actually did not mention in this video is how walking can help you recover recover from an injury recover from an illness i should also mention that i'm not a doctor not a licensed personal trainer this podcast is for education and entertainment purposes only since i've started walking as my primary fitness activity
Dave Paul 3:59
Gratefully, I've not had an injury or an illness that has sidelined me for more than a couple of days. So I've not experienced firsthand this idea of walking to recover, whether it's recovering again from an illness or an injury. That said, I've had a front row seat watching my wife Ava do this multiple times. There was the time where she had a condition known as osteonecrosis in her knee. Essentially, her bone was beginning to fall apart. And the prescription was don't put any weight on it for six weeks. and then slowly, gradually get back into movement, weight-bearing, walking, and for my wife, ultimately running. So there was that. There was the accident, terrible accident she was in five and a half years ago.
Dave Paul 5:06
She was in a wheelchair for two months, and there were three surgeries involved with that accident. There was a surgery known as a colectomy. She had diverticulitis and part of her colon had to be removed. The doctor said the day of the surgery, As soon as you're able, start walking."
