What are the unexpected benefits of a daily 10‑minute walk?

Dave Paul 0:02
Today, we're going to talk about one of the unplanned for benefits of walking. Hi, I'm Dave. Welcome to Walking is Fitness, a daily 10-minute podcast designed to provide you with a little added motivation and encouragement to get out, take the walk, and more importantly, to keep going, to build a life-changing walking habit. Today's 10-minute walk starts right after. This. I am on my back porch with a box I just got from Topo Athletic. These contain my new shoes. The ST6, these are minimal shoes. Wide toe box, all the Topo Athletic shoes come with a wide toe box. My shoes have a zero drop. This is part of a journey I've been on to make my feet stronger, to move towards a more minimal shoe. With Topo Athletic, they've got shoes for every need, minimal shoes, maximal cushion.
Dave Paul 0:53
They've got road shoes, trail shoes. Recovery shoes, race shoes. All right, let's open The box and there's a box inside the box and these are nice looking and very light, very light. Pull the inserts out, try them on. Boy, I can feel the difference the wide toe box makes instantly. By the way, Topo Athletic, brand new sponsor of Walking is Fitness. You can check them out.

How do minimal shoes like the Topo Athletic ST6 improve walking comfort?

Dave Paul 1:22
Again, TopoAthletic.com. You can do your shopping online. You can also see where you can pick up Topo shoes at a retailer near you. Alright, leaving the back porch. Walking in and yeah, this wide toe box makes a huge difference. So I'm gonna be wearing these and I'll give you an update shortly. In the meantime, check them out, Topo Athletic, T-O-P-O, Topoathletic.com. Sonia writes, Hi Dave, I've just printed off another 30-day challenge for July. Thank you for the inspiration. Sonia, thank you for letting us know what you're doing and really this is my heartbeat for the 30-day walking challenge. It wasn't just a one-off, but hopefully it's the beginning of creating this life-lasting, life-changing walking habit.
Dave Paul 2:24
And I'm really thrilled when I hear listeners like you who have decided to keep going in July. Whether it's a daily walk Or the challenge in July is to walk one more time than you walked in June. Love that. Cindy says, Hi, tracking for me is a deterrent. The digital type can be a frustrating waste of time. Apps can be tricky and can stall and your walk isn't recorded. I may give your printable version a try. I am 13 weeks post-op hip replacement surgery, so I am motivated by the relief of feeling no pain and getting stronger every day.

Why can digital walking trackers feel like a deterrent, and how can printable trackers help?

Dave Paul 3:08
Physical therapists have taught me the mechanics of walking and it is enlightening and inspiring. I've listened to you before this period of my life, long before my diagnosis. Your messages kept me going when walking was painful. Walking helped me prepare for my surgery. Thank you, Cindy. Cindy, thank you. It's great to hear that post-op, your recovery is going well. And your determination, your commitment, your strength in getting out and walking, even when it was painful, has actually helped you recover probably. Probably faster than otherwise. There's research, they call this prehabbing. So before you need surgery, this commitment to walking, commitment to fitness, exercise actually prepares you for the surgery and the recovery in ways maybe you didn't even expect.
Dave Paul 4:12
So there's research about this. Patients who walked about 7,500 steps a day before surgery. Have been shown to have a fifty-one percent lower risk of complications within ninety days of the procedure. And while this is not scientific research, I've had a front row seat to Ava's post-surgery recovery on a several of occasions following the accident. There was a diverticulitis surgery and a procedure that she had done last year. And in all three situations, her recovery was amazing, even amazed the medical professional. And that's because she went into each one of those situations with a pretty high level of fitness. So you may not expect surgery. Ava certainly didn't expect the accident, but her commitment to fitness was a huge component in how well and how quickly she recovered after the accident, after the surgery, and after the procedure.

How does regular walking before surgery lower post‑operative complication risk?

Darthea writes, Hi, Dave.
