Why does Dave ask “Why are you doing this?” at the start of the episode?

Dave Paul 0:03
Why are you doing this? It is a super important question. Hi, I'm Dave. Welcome to Walking as Fitness, a daily 10-minute podcast designed to provide you with a little added motivation to get out the door, take the walk, and more importantly, to keep going to build a life-changing walking habit. Today's 10-minute walk starts right after this. I am on my back porch with a box I just got from Topo Athletic. These contain my new shoes. The ST6, these are minimal shoes, wide toe box. All the Topo Athletic shoes come with a wide toe box. My shoes have a zero drop. This part of a journey I've been on to make my feet stronger, to move towards a more minimal shoe. With Topo Athletic, they've got shoes for every need: minimal shoes, maximal cushion.
Dave Paul 0:48
They've got road shoes, trail shoes, recovery shoes, race shoes. Alright, let's open the box. And there's a box inside the box. And these are nice looking. And very light. Very light. Let's pull the inserts out. Try them on. Boy, I can feel the difference the wide toe box makes instantly. By the way, Topo Athletic, brand new sponsor of Walking is Fitness. You can check them out. Again, TopoAthletic.com. You can do your shopping online. You can also see where you can pick up topo shoes at a retailer near you, all right, leaving the back porch. Walking in and yeah, this wide toe box makes a huge difference. So I'm gonna be wearing these and I'll give you an update shortly. In the meantime, check them out, Topo Athletic, T-O-P-O, Topoathletic.com.

It is day 12 of the 30-day walking challenge.

What makes the new Topo Athletic ST6 shoes feel different right out of the box?

Dave Paul 1:48
That is, if you started on June 1st, if you did not start June 1st, it's not too late. That window isn't closed, that door isn't shut. You can start the 30-day walking challenge whenever it's convenient for you. Simply commit to walking 10 minutes a day for 30 days. Download the 30-day fitness chain tracker. There's a link in the show notes, totally free. And then color in a shoe print every day. Every day you take the walk. And if you miss a day, reframe the challenge from every day to as many days as possible. Dingrogu left this comment on the Walking as Fitness YouTube channel. This was a comment to the video about the 30-day walking challenge. Here's what Dingrogu says. I had a friend, she was in her 70s.

She was a retired widow. She spent her time sitting in a chair. She would only get up to eat and use the bathroom. She spent nine Ninety percent of her time sitting and watching TV. Her kids let her do that. They would buy her McDonald's, KFC, Wendy's to eat every single day. One day she was struggling to breathe and was taken to the ER. Her heart lost the ability to pump blood efficiently. She didn't have a heart attack. The heart is a muscle, and her muscle had weakened so bad that she had to be put on oxygen permanently. It was very sad to see her decline. Even after she was given the oxygen tanks and the portable oxygen bag and the home oxygen machine, she kept sitting. She would sit and watch Netflix all day.
Dave Paul 3:31
One day she Her brain stopped registering that she needed to get up and And walk to the restroom.

How does the 30‑day walking challenge work and why can you start anytime?

Dave Paul 3:39
She developed incontinence. She eventually lost control of her legs and had to use a wheelchair. This led to UTIs and early dementia. It was difficult seeing this intelligent, highly educated woman with amazing artistic abilities become a shell of herself. I watched her spend two years just sitting. She would invite me over to dinner. dinner and we would watch movies. Maybe it was depression. She never recovered from losing her husband. They had been together since high school, I understand. I invited her to walk with me, but she kept saying no. I just think, what if she had walked ten minutes a day? My joints are stiff in my hips. I have a lot of joint pain. I get up and do things because sitting still hurts too.
Dave Paul 4:31
My adult kids yell at me every day, Mom, you need to walk. I roll my eyes like a toddler. Well, I'm doing this 30 day walking challenge. Thank you for the video. Again a comment from someone, at least on YouTube, who goes by the name Din Grogu. So after Ava's accident, she had a lot of doctors appointments, and of course I would accompany her to those appointments.
