What is the main topic discussed in this episode?
What are the things that make a caterer stand out? Is it the tasting, whether it's in a group setting or individual? What if somebody's gluten-free or vegan? What is the number one question you should be asking your caterer prior to booking? Welcome to the Wedding Planning Experts Podcast, hosted by Dan and Andrea DeWard, owners of Full Circle Weddings. After 25 years in the wedding industry, owning and operating multiple wedding venues, hosting hundreds of ceremonies and receptions, we provide tips to help brides and grooms plan their wedding stress-free and on budget. So let's dive in and talk about all things weddings. Okay, Ashley from Kangaroo Kitchen, we are happy to have you here. We have known each other a long time, worked together in many, many weddings.
And so we are happy to have you here and talk about catering.
Yeah, thank you so much for having me out. So I'd like to start out by asking you the background of Kangaroo Kitchen as far as when did it get started and who started it?
So Roman Petrek is the owner. So he was originally from Australia. He came over here. He's been here for probably just... below 30 years now so but he started it when he came to grand rapids and just opened up a small 20-seater restaurant to kind of get his name out and then once his name got out he just closed down it took him about a couple years to where he just then closed the restaurant and it just got into venues and just started doing catering only
Interesting. And every person I've talked to over the years that has met Roman loves his accent.
Yes. So definitely Americans love the Australian accent. So it puts that special little bit of charm to the catering too. So.
So what led you to Kangaroo Kitchen? How did you meet Roman?
Yeah. So I originally had a friend that had worked for him as just a part-time server. When he first got into venues, he was just starting to find some staff. So he needed some staff members and I said that I would help him out one weekend. I was a stay at home mom, not looking for a job. And I just, you know, thought it would be fun. I did my first event with them and I just, I absolutely loved it. I fell in love with it from the very beginning. Just the atmosphere, the people, just everyone was so happy. They just really loved the food. So it was just it was such a rewarding position. So I figured I'd try it again a couple of times. And after about my fifth event, that's when Chef Roman had asked if I could come on as full time.
He needed the extra help. And I just kind of created the position that I have.
And how long ago was that?
So that was nine years ago. Nine years ago. Nine and a half years ago. So. okay so quite some time and then you kind of oversee everything yep so i'm currently the general manager right now so i oversee operations here you know watch over i do all the wedding planning with the clients i sit down with them basically from the very beginning from when they come in for their tasting to like all the way till the very end I'm typically not at events now that we have like our main staff put in place. So they'll be assigned a head chef, a lead server, and then they'll have a full staff there to help out with the events. And that's what their specialty is.
Tell us what makes Kangaroo Kitchen stand out over some of the other caterers that you see.
Yeah, so I mean, it's just it's more about the experience.
What is Kangaroo Kitchen and how did Roman start the company?
You know, we like to think of us as a little bit more unique, both with food and just just their experience. Right. So clients want someone that they could trust. They want somebody that they just feel is confident in what they do and that it's not just another simple transaction of, you know, here I'm hiring you to do this job. You know, they want to feel like important. And we're able to do that because we choose to stay smaller as a company and And the demand is so high for us right now, we could triple in size if we choose to. But we just prefer to just keep that quality there and just be able to take care of the client because we love what we do.
