Okay. All right, thank you. We're um it's September the twenty fifth and we're starting the Charlotte City Council meeting. We begin with um introductions and being called to order, I will now ask our um city attorney

Good evening, Lawana Slight Mayfield, Councilmember at large. Good evening, Renee Johnson, and I'm honored to serve district four. Billy Tons, Deputy City Clerk. All right. So at this point in our um agenda we are talking about those things that might be on our agenda in the future as well as those opportunities that we have to get various reports and information together. And so we'll start this evening's meeting. by welcoming Kiva Walton and Monifa Drape Of the Mecklenburg County Alcohol Beverage Control Board, mostly known as ABC. To introduce themselves and to give us a presentation. And I just we have another council member that just joined us. Thanks which one is it? Introduce yourself, please. Dimple Ajmera, head large.
Thank you. All right, Mr. Walton, thank you. Well, good evening. My apologies for my hoarse voice, but uh thank you for the opportunity to be here. And our purpose is really quite simple: to introduce to some and to reintroduce to others, to others, the Mecklenburg County Alcoholic Control Board. And let me say that um actually 76 years ago now, uh the Mecklenburg County Board of Commissioners and the voters. Mm-hmm. What is known as an an evergreen business, a business that is self-replenishing, self-funding and meant to improve community. That business is Mecklenburg County ABC Board. And at its founding, there were some very specific parameters put in place on how that board would exist in this community.
And a big part of that was investing dollars back into the community. Again, no tax dollars, completely self-funded from the revenues generated by the sales. And I think it's important to look. Look at In seventy five years, that's what that investment looks like. And it continues to grow. A big part of that investment, as you can see, was when Mecklenburg set it up. uh a percentage of the profits because we can't keep profits by general statutes and we have a threshold uh that we can't go above. And so uh an annual part of our budget is uh is uh incentive is investment in Mecklenburg County, City of Charlotte, public library, alcohol education and law enforcement. So there's nothing you can do about receiving a check, you're gonna get one.
It's in the budget. So that's what uh this looks like. And so when we talk about being community invested. That's what we mean. We put dollars behind this mission. And let's be clear, um, you know, we we all might enjoy an adult beverage, but there are many among us who struggle. with addiction. whether it be alcohol or and I would encourage us all to pay very close attention to to the fentanyl crisis, uh growing uh exponentially and quietly, but not so quietly. So a big part of our mis mission really is about alcohol education. So today kind of three Cs I wanna leave you with. Um For us. The first is around community. It's easy to forget that in a place like Charlotte, but we see the numbers. We see the casualties and we saw a lot of it during the pandemic. But a big part of of our uh effort and our mission is Supporting community and making sure that alcohol education, treatment
and
prevention is a priority. Yeah. Here
we go.
So a big part of it is we have an annual community granting process. Um In total this year alone total one point nine milyen dollars.
These grants you see before you, these are small grassroots organizations who are doing the work of substance misuse, education, treatment and prevention on the ground. Where people are. That's important to know. And the other thing we did that's really significant this year is we added a fiscal agent component because we want these emerging organizations to be successful.
