Perfect. Well good evening everyone and welcome to our January twenty eighth, twenty twenty six Planning Commission meeting. I want to take a moment to thank everybody for uh coming out on uh such a nasty, cold, wintry, sl uh ice filled uh night. Uh but uh uh on balance uh uh given the s the feedback I've received from my colleagues In uh from the county. Uh, I thought the best thing to do would be to convene our meeting tonight. So, but I do appreciate everybody taking the making the effort to be here. Uh our agenda this evening, um oh and by the way I want to thank the qu uh the camera crew in particular, our security guys, um Yeah, y you you didn't uh you you service well and it and it's on evenings like this where it's tough to get in that you particularly service well.
Our agenda this evening consists of a conversation with Mr Barry Bigger, uh who's president and CEO of the Fairfax County Convention and Visitors Corporation, and visit Fairfax. Uh we also have Commission business, which includes a decision only um or uh Commissioner Carter will explain, probably a deferral. And then we convene two public hearings. So uh periodically the Commission welcomes individuals to meet with us in the first half hour of our meeting. whose work has a significant and positive impact on the community in the direction in which our county is evolving. Mr Berry Bigger certainly meets these criteria. He is the president, as I said, and chief executive officer of the Fairfax County Convention and Visitors Corporation and Visit Fairfax, the official tourism organization for Fairfax County.
A role He has performed for the past sixteen and a half years. I will repeat that sixteen and a half years. So what did what experience? Under Barry's leadership, Fairfax County's tourism economy has doubled, generating nearly four billion in annual four billion dollars in annual direct visitor spending. A visitor spending of course creates jobs and businesses and ultimately then generates millions in state and local tax revenue. Barry has been recognized the past two years as one of Northern Virginia's top ten most influential leaders Not only for his leadership within Fairfax County's tourism industry But also for his role in advancing the overall economy. He recently received the prestigious Tower of Dulles Award for his contributions for significantly enhancing Dulles International Airport and the Dulles Economic Corridor.
His efforts include international outreach to enhance air service and expand into new markets, further solidifying Fairfax County as a key destination in the Washington D C area. In addition to his work for Visit Fairfax, Mr. Bigger has served on a bo uh a number of boards, the boards of Destinations International, the Virginia Association of Destination Marketing Organizations, the Virginia Restaurant Lodging and Travel Association. The Northern Virginia Chamber of Commerce and the Workhouse Arts Center.
How has Fairfax County’s tourism economy grown under Barry Bigger’s leadership?
He was a founding member of Fairfax Count Fairfax County's Sports Tourism Task Force and currently serves on the board of directors for Arts Fairfax and is the treasurer of the Northern Virginia Tourism Partnership. The planning commission's mission is centered on land use within the county. A focus that extends beyond zoning and density decisions. We also consider quality of life factors such as what takes pla uh what makes a place a uh a place a home, a neighborhood, a thriving community. We therefore play an important role synergistic with Visit Fairfax in promoting a vibrant and growing economy. So tonight we welcome Mr Bigger. uh to have a conversation about that synergy in our respective roles and responsibilities.

And to be here this evening with such an agust body, such as the Planning Commission, warms my heart, and we need all the warmth we can get.
