Well good evening and welcome everyone to our january seventh, twenty twenty six Planning Commission meeting. Uh the first uh meeting of our calendar year. Uh first order of business t tonight is the swearing in of our Commission colleagues, John Carter and Walter Clark. Uh, both John and Walter were reappointed late last year by the Board of Supervisors for another four year term. Uh to conduct this ceremony we're honored to have with us this evening Mr Chris Falcon, who is a f uh Fairfax County Clerk of the Court. Uh and welcome Clerk Falcon. Thanks for being here. Uh the planning commission, this is just a little bit of a backdrop. We we play a critical role among the county's more than eighty-five boards, commissions, and authorities.
Our mission is to guide the county's future by deciding some matters such as the twenty two thirty two applications on public facilities and providing the Board of Supervisors with strategic recommendations on land use policies, plans, and their implementation through development applications. In partnership with the county's exceptional professional staff We offer our recommendations with a focus on fostering balanced, orderly and equitable growth across the county. Our goal is to ensure that development reflects the needs and values of the community. Commissioners are appointed by the Board of Supervisors to serve four year terms. Each of the nine magisterial districts is represented here at the dais, and three at large members uh the three at large commissioners serve on behalf of the entire county.
The Planning Commission's workload is substantial. Last year we convened thirty six regular meetings and workshops, took ninety nine actions, ranging from consideration of straightforward signed ordinance requests to complex multimillion dollar developments such as those in our urban centres. During our public hearings we heard testimony from three hundred and eighty nine community members. In addition, our planning commission committees met twenty five times throughout that year. The work of the Commission also extends to what I would call behind the scenes as we engage with staff, the public, land use committees and developers to resolve issues and ensure progress on key matters. So a substantial commitment of time and level of effort is required of the Commissioners and Commissioners Carter and and uh Commissioners Car Clark have certainly given their uh their d their level of effort in that regard.
So Commissioner Carter, if you would work your way to the podium, let me give uh just a little bit of background. Uh John A. Carter is an eight year veteran, planning commissioner, representing the Hunter Mill district. Uh, Commissioner Carter has been a member of the Architectural Review Board, served in various advisory capacities in the Hunter Mill district. such as the Hunter Mill District Land Use Committee. and co chair the vision committee for the rest of the master plan special study. John has lived in Reston for over forty years. Commissioner Carter was employed for over thirty five years with the Montgomery County Planning Department of the Maryland. National C uh Capital Park and Planning Commission.
He is a licensed architect in Virginia and a member of the American Planning Association. and the American Institute of Architects. He has a master of planning from the University of Virginia, a master of architecture in urban design from Virginia Tech. and a bachelor of architecture with distinction from Arizona State University. I'll leave it to the to the the clerk to do the do the honors.
