All right, I'm going to be stepping down to the podium because we are very honored. We're on to the award presentation to be receiving an award from the Virginia Environmental Excellence Program. Thank you. You can come to the podium.
Good afternoon and thank you very much for having us. My name is Richard Doucette. I'm the regional director for the Northern Regional Office of the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality. Over the years, I've stood in this room before and these are one of the happy times we're here. and always happy to celebrate the achievements that Prince William has done. Uh, Prince William is a remarkable County. We have our office right down the street in Woodbridge and we work very closely with everybody within your government. And again, I would just want to say you, you hold the gold standard in our eyes. So thank you for everything you do. We're here to talk about the Virginia environmental excellence program in Prince William is one of the original earliest members of this program.
This program, is aiming to allow facilities to do voluntary activities and find ways to help the environment. Prince William was exceptionally nice, and they actually took several of their E3, or the Exemplary Environmental Enterprise, and combined them. So not only are we helping the environment, we're also doing less paperwork, and that helps everybody. Also, their Solid Waste Division is actually an E4 member, which is the Extraordinary Environmental Excellence Enterprise Program. And they have a long history of doing things above and beyond with their hazardous waste program, helping out the citizens, helping out the community and really driving environment first in this community. Veep is our voluntary program in these.
This has facilities to be committed in defining and following the regulations, but also finding ways to improve it. I want to take a moment just to recognize some of the ways that Prince William County has improved their environmental effort. Countywide policies have been established to protect the watershed, which is extremely important. They have bottle-filling station programs that prevent the use of plastic bottles. They have a strong fuel tank inspection program to help with spill response. And they have a chemical management program that has reduced the generation of hazardous chemicals by over 80%. By looking at all the different ways they can fill this void and provide services to their community and to themselves, it allows us to recognize you for doing more for the environment than is required.
So we do want to point out that the Solid Waste Division continues to maintain their E-4 certification. And my background is in waste, and I've been here before. to talk about Possum Point and other things. And this is one of those occasions where we get to look at all the great ways your landfill is operating and running and helping the citizens, but also being a landmark for people to follow. So when people ask me, I need to look at a permit, which permit do I point them to? I point them to your landfill permit. So you all are not only getting an award for this, but you're also held in high regards from our sakes. I just want to say thank you again, congratulations, and we look forward to working with you in the
future.
