All right, thank you so very much. We are going to start the meeting out with proclamations and accommod uh and commendations. We have one proclamation to proclaim February twenty twenty four, Benimit Benefit Program Specialist Appreciation Month. And one proclamation to proclaim March twenty twenty four is Irish American Heritage Month. I would like to entertain a motion to approve agenda items three A and three B.

Alright. Benefit Program Specialist Appreciation Month. Whereas Prince William County recognizes the importance of providing a level of economic stability by administering federal and state benefit programs to over 130,000 residents, including supplemental nutrition assistance, temporary assistance for needy families, Medicaid assistance, subsidized child care, long-term care, auxiliary grant, refugee cash assistance, employment services programs, and energy assistance. And whereas benefit program specialists continue to experience unprecedented implementation of rapidly changing complex policies and procedures in all significant benefit programs. As well as continuing changes in service delivery and technology while navigating through the Medicaid unwinding, ending public health pandemic specific policies.
And whereas Prince William County's 2012 benefit program staff provide ethical public service adhering to Prince William County's vision and values to ensure that those qualified for federal and state beneficial Now therefore it be resolved that the Prince William Board of County Supervisors hereby proclaims February twenty twenty four is the Benefit Program Specialist Appreciation Month. Thank you. Before we begin, I'm gonna ask you thank you, someone cut off my mic. All right. Thank you. I'm gonna turn it over to Mr. Ney if you have any words.
Thank you, Madam Chair. I'm Courtney Tierney, Director of the Department of Social Services, and with me today is our DSS Deputy Director, Phyllis Jennings Holt, DSS Assistant Directors for both public assistance and customer support and services, Moran Gebermedon and Holly Handy, with program managers Diana Cuya, Lucia Dentoni, Michelle Henson, and Norma Sanchez. We thank you for honoring our 212 staff. Staff members who help over 130,000 local public assistance recipients. They process and determine eligibility of the many new applications. Over 10,000 were received in the last six months while also renewing the benefits of current recipients. We have 45 days to determine eligibility for new applications and 30 days to renew benefits for SNAP.
Renewals happen twice a year and for Medicaid and TANF renewals are once a year. The number of households on Medicaid Has increased 53% in less than three years. Almost half of all recipients are children. These are people with extremely low incomes in need of health insurance. SNAP provides food and TANF provides additional support for families with low income. Employment requirements exist for both, and the View team handles this. Federally subsidized childcare and energy assistance, along with assistance to refugees, are also robust public assistance program, as is SNAP fraud, is also investigated. Those with Medicaid who have severe medical needs may be eligible for long-term Medicaid. This population has also increased 50% and requires an additional psychosocial assessment jointly with the health district's medical assessment.
