This is what has fascinated me about the optometric profession.
And I've said this on numerous different presentations and podcasts.
It's the only medical modality in which the prescription has been commoditized.
You said it earlier, the way in which the patient treats.
truly gets to benefit from the expertise and the intellectual property of the doctor when we're talking about wearables, whether it's contacts and or glasses, is after a good has been purchased, right?
After something has happened in optical, after something has been truly dispensed.
No other medical profession has that level of
tangible experience from a consumerism standpoint, all the other medical modalities, dentistry, dermatology, primary medicine, I don't care which one it is, it still feels from the patient's perspective as part of a medical experience.
That's right.
But in optometry, and look, I'm emphasizing what I've observed over the years as being common sense, but I still, when I talk to ODs, I still get that friction of
Almost the, well, this sucks.
I'm a doctor.
I don't want to have to deal with this stuff.
Why do I?
Why?
Why can't patients just...
take the script that I'm prescribing.
Here's what it is.
Like, just buy the glasses, get the lenses that we're prescribing and be on your way.
Because you're not questioning your dentist when they do your root canal.
