But I very quickly realised that, of course, as you well know, that in talking about the northern part of this island, you have to consider the past.
You know, that the past and the present and the future coexist.
And also I realised that younger people didn't really know
the story of the troubles.
So I felt first of all we had to, in a fairly simple way, interweave the story of the division of the island, but also
I always like when I'm making a film, you know, to get away from my desk and go and drive and walk, particularly walk.
And, you know, walk those lanes and walk the border and walk the cities.
And you feel the ghosts of the past.
And you also, talking to anybody in Northern Ireland, regardless of their political persuasion, you feel the trauma.
And...
You can only look at the future of the island by confronting the past, the ghosts of that trauma.
And of course, so what we did with some of it is it's shot kind of sort of home movie, super eight footage, which I was trying to evoke that sense of the past and the present kind of merging, you know.
So even if you actually stand on the border,
And you're seeing one bit of tarmac meet another and a few fireworks signs.
It's not very dramatic.
And yet you can feel the import of that.
And, you know, I can remember going through the army checkpoints and and I still kind of a rational thing when I'm driving south back home.
I feel a strange relief when I cross the border, you know, and yet there's many people down here haven't been in the north, which is now such a vibrant and fabulous place.
Yeah, and I don't think we fully realise that.
But also I did feel...
