You know, there's a terrible sorrow I felt when you move among loyalist or unionist communities in the north.

You know, a sense that a very proud tradition, complex, a very unique culture has kind of been forgotten by Britain.

And certainly we talked to many people in Britain who said the United Kingdom is falling apart, never mind anything else.

And...

And there is a kind of melancholic soul there, I think, in the unionist community.

And I think we in the South, if we were to unite, would have to absorb that and understand it and facilitate it because it is part of us on this island now.

You know, it's a very valid part.

Absolutely.

I think Linda Irving, who's a great force for good in the North, you know, actually said that she was afraid of that.

And I think...

Time moves very quickly and history changes and things get forgotten and the violence has been forgotten.

And yet we also saw in the recent riots, race riots in Belfast, that there is violence bubbling under and all you need to do... And on this side of the border too.

Absolutely.

And a lot of the influence coming from beyond this island is...

All you have to do is light the powder keg.

So I think we have to be aware of that.

You know, I think the peace that we enjoy on this island was hard won and is a joyful thing.

And Northern Ireland's a beautiful place to visit.

But I think we have to be aware of all these undercurrents bubbling.

Yeah, and it could be a unifying thing.
