I'm pleased to welcome to the commission Eddie Edwards.

He's a commissioner in the city of Miramar, and also his wife, Bridget, who is also here.

This proclamation is recognizing the month of February as Reggae Month.

Whereas reggae music, originating in Jamaica in the late 1960s, has evolved into a global phenomenon that promotes messages of peace, love, and unity, influencing cultures worldwide, earning UNESCO's recognition as an intangible cultural heritage of humanity in 2018.

And whereas the government of Jamaica officially declared February as Reggae Month on January 9th, 2008, to celebrate and highlight the profound impact of reggae music coinciding with Black History Month and honoring the February birthdays of reggae legends Bob Marley and Dennis Brown.

And whereas Reggae Month serves as an annual dedication to promoting and appreciating reggae music's cultural significance, led by the Jamaica Reggae Industry Association and the Ministry of Culture, Gender, Entertainment, and Sport, featuring events that showcase the genre's history, artists, and contributions to society,

And whereas the first significant recognition and celebration of Reggae Month outside Jamaica was established in the city of Miramar through the visionary Black History Month Meets Reggae initiative,

launched by then Merrimack Commissioner, myself, Alexandra P. Davis, marking an historic fusion of African American heritage and Caribbean culture.

And whereas under Commissioner Davis' leadership and initiative,

Three flagship events were established, the Reggae Icon Awards in 2020, honoring key contributors to the reggae industry, the Afro-Caribbean Festival in 2020, celebrating African and Caribbean music, culture, and heritage, and the Selector Showdown

in 2022, a DJ and sound system competition that highlights dancehall culture.

And whereas Merrimar City Commissioner Carson Eddie Edwards, born in Kingston, Jamaica, with over 30 years of experience in the entertainment and marketing professions, officially assumed responsibility for continuing this legacy, fostering unity and cultural celebration in Merrimar.

And whereas this year's events will continue to enrich the community, with the Reggae Icon Awards scheduled for February 26, the Selecta Showdown, February 27, and the Afro-Carib Festival scheduled on February 28, inviting everyone to enjoy the rhythms and the heritage of reggae.

now therefore be proclaimed by the Broward County Board of County Commissioners that the Board hereby designates February 2026 as Reg A Appreciation and Celebration Month

in Broward County, Florida.
