Because uh largely because of Mayor Castillo's uh bringing this issue up, we opened up uh free seats last week, Mayor. podcast-host

So now uh a bus route uh has a defined set of pickup points. podcast-host

If it has 10 extra seats on that bus, uh we're now letting 10 people that are within the two mile radius uh come to those stops and and get on the bus. podcast-host

So we started much earlier uh this year than ever. podcast-host

We also have bought an app called Here Comes the Bus to encourage people to think about their own preferences because one of the big obstacles is podcast-host

Is that people have the freedom to choose between driving or putting their kid on the bus? podcast-host

My neighbor, when my kids walk to the bus at the corner. podcast-host

uh, then passes the bus stop in her car to take her one child uh the exact same route uh that the bus goes and I shake my head every day thinking podcast-host

You know, what impact does that have on the environment and and the traffic? podcast-host

And uh the kids do get a lot out of that experience on the bus. podcast-host

It's a great part of their social and emotional learning. podcast-host

Uh we have great bus drivers. podcast-host

We have uh now a pretty big fleet of natural uh gas uh and electric buses, so uh that's going well. podcast-host

We've seen other cities, by the way, Mayor, uh that have created bike buses within two miles. podcast-host

So a parent or a group of parent volunteers and they run a route on bikes and the kids ride their bikes so that it keep uh traffic off the road. podcast-host
