So I had a $50 loss on that share.

If I do nothing and I still own the share, then I have no realized loss, which means I file my tax return.

I don't get a tax benefit for losing that.

I don't get to offset it with gain, any of those things we talk about from time to time.

Now, if I have that hundred dollar position, it drops down to 50 and I sell it.

So I think if you're trying to draw a line in the sand, that's when you would, from a tax perspective, have a loss.

But remember, Tess, that investment, whatever it might be, has decreased in value over time.

The way I like to think about this is you look at the current price and you decide,

with that current price do i think that the shares will go back up or go back down which direction do i think this will go which comes to for an individual company understanding why you own that company and if you're really determined that this company is going to do very well in the long term a lot of times it makes sense to continue to hold that position

If you think it's on the verge of going bankrupt, maybe it's time to sell.

Obviously there's some technical trading in there too, so that's not a formal recommendation on the only consideration, but sometimes that will help you inform when is it time to take that loss

realize it and buy something I'm more confident going forward.

And when is it time to use your words to stay the course, to continue to hold that knowing that over time stocks just move up and down and we can't just sell every time it goes up or down.
