But one of the things that I have seen before is people wait.
and they stay in the market too long.
When they have that goal that gets closer and closer and closer, and we've had the last couple of years in 2024 and 2025 with outstanding market returns, it's very easy to get comfortable and think, well, the last couple of years, and I'm picking numbers here because I don't want to have to
to cite my sources, the market has done 15%.
So I'm just going to stay in because it should do 15 this year.
And there's a bias to that.
So don't let the market bias of the last year, the last month, the last week, the last decade, whatever, decade maybe, but the last period of time
indicate to you that you should stay in for the next period of time because it's not a guarantee.
In fact, all the time we have to disclaim past performance is not indicative of future results.
So the second thing, not only the fear of that individual holding, but making sure that you're not over allocated in the goals coming to fruition.
And over time, maybe taking risk off the table so you have that cash and more of a safe investment as it gets closer and closer to when that goal comes to fruition.
So that's number one.
The second thing I want to touch on in your question is almost the sentiment of, well, when is it actually a loss?
And I think this is fascinating.
To your point, Quinn, it is riddled with psychology a little bit.
From a technical perspective, there's two different types of gains or losses.
There is an unrealized gain or loss.
That's what you're seeing when you're logging into your account and every day the account balance changes and there's that nice percentage next to it of what you're up or down for the day or month or year, whatever period you're looking at.
That is not technically realized yet, meaning when you file your tax return, anything you sell, then that's captured.
