I think a thing that seems interesting to me is the way that by the end of the piece, Nicole Hannah Jones is almost admitting that what happened here was a failure.
But she did
She sh she was able to get her daughter to a place of academic achievement.
And still be accepting and
acknowledging of the school system that she came through in order to get there, which means like she did make a choice that she acknowledges to her daughter.
was not optimal or not even helpful or beneficial for her development, but it was something that she was able to admit to and that her daughter was able to grow from.
Not saying that that's something that's like
what she would do intentionally, but just saying that the failure here wasn't total.
And I would add that the values that she was trying to live up to.
You could write the story in a way that doesn't have to have race in it at all.
But obviously, obviously it's there.
So there's there's two twin aspects of this that are pernicious.
One is the the racial side where you have a lot of cultural pressure to try to act as a member of a group that you have different understandings of based on whether or not you think you're a member of that group.
I mean, something I've talked about with respect to my own Judaism.
I'm not a Jewish.
practitioner religiously, but other people see me as Jewish.
It's part of my background.
So it's part of my identity.
And some some way it's not something you get to negotiate it away, but it is something you negotiate.
And it's another part of this is economic, which is lot, lot harder to negotiate.
