What was the adjustment like?
Yes.

So you weren't able to continue with your high school education, which must have been devastating.
Where did you end up getting your first job?
I'm just reflecting on that and thinking about how in that short space of those few years, you've gone from pretty hard life, you know, pretty bare bones life in a convent after you've lost your mother, eating gray mints, you know, and lumpy porridge.
And now at the age of 14, you find yourself surrounded by, I think, every kid's heaven, which is surrounded by lollies and sweets.
That must have been a bit of a whiplash moment.
Pretty tight budget.
Very tight budget.
Did you enjoy working at the department store surrounded by all the lollies, even if you couldn't buy them?
But were you still thinking about poetry and music and all those things, you know, but your love of language that you had found at school at the convent?
And I'm imagining that you wouldn't have had the idea even that those things that you loved could be a job or something that you did for work at that point.
When you were about 15, Dad packed you all up again and you moved to Benalla, where you were then working at a migrant camp for World War II refugees.
And then, you know, marriage and family comes along.
How old were you when you got married?
I was 22.
What was that stage of your life like?
And that's wonderful to hear, but I'm wondering, you know, someone of your curiosity and your kind of intellectual hunger, I suppose, that you had, that you displayed all the way through childhood, were you still feeling like you were missing something for yourself?
What was it like finally being back in the classroom?
