So what I do before these events is I normally take a week off any caffeine coffee to try and prime my body and receptors to be able to utilize it when I use it.

I treat caffeine very much like a drug.

and i took it on day three and i took it with some painkillers and that was enough to get me moving and i was able to kind of make kind of decent speed even though i was pushing through the pain and i was very very aware that every step i took was probably tearing my achilles a little bit more and what happens and if you've ever got an injury which i'm sure everybody listening to this you've suffered some injury at some stage when you power through it you start to get this super compensatory effect everywhere else where everything else starts to compensate trying to

effectively make you move.

But even though you're moving, your biomechanics are moving in a way that's unnatural to your body.

So I was running and moving in a limp, which meant that my knee started to throb.

And then my glutes started to like get really painful.

And I had a tear.

I ripped all the skin off the back of my heel on my right foot.

And there's a video on that as well that I'll hopefully upload.

I took all the skin, the first three layers of skin off the back of my heel from where the snowshoes were catching me.

So I was running in a very weird duck-like way where I was kind of hobbling from side to side.

And I had told Simon, I had told the medics that I wasn't pulling out of the race.

That wasn't an option.

We were 84 kilometers from the end at this stage when I got talking to one of the doctors who is British Marine, British Marine doctor, so I can't say his name.

And he said that if your Achilles ruptures, we're going to have to rush you to hospital.

And I told him I was finishing.

I told him, well, if it ruptures, it ruptures.

It'll heal.

And that was kind of the turning point where I made the decision that if it ruptures, fuck it, and it falls off, unless it's frostbite or hypothermia and can potentially put my life at risk, I'm going to finish this.
