Even if you might be in dispute with a particular country, you might say, well, this country doesn't like me very much and I don't like them very much, but hey, business is business.
In other words, do you want to buy huge amounts of dirt from WA to build a modern industrial society?
That's what Effective Urban China has done.
And we've been able to basically say, look, we have significant disagreements with China on a whole bunch of things, but business is business.
They rely on us for a lot of raw material.
We rely on them for a lot of finished product, including some quite critical finished product, like pharmaceuticals, like medical equipment, like masks.
And I think what COVID started to do and I think what this latest crisis is doing is really sort of reinforcing a trend and that is the geopolitical risk, the risk that some conflict starts up that could seriously disrupt our business, our economy, our society.
We need to take that into account when we're thinking about who we buy stuff from, where we get stuff manufactured from.
who we sell stuff to.
So it may be, and I think we're already seeing this a little bit in global supply chains, the idea that, look, I used to buy from this particular country, but I just think that there's a geopolitical angle here.
So I'm going to buy from this country instead, or I'm going to maybe try and find a domestic supplier for some things.
That's a live discussion, not just here in Australia, but I think we're seeing that globally as well.
And that's the world we're in.
It's in an inherently unstable world.
And it's affecting a whole range of industries.
And this idea that, oh, we just need to keep a little bit in reserve in case of emergencies.
Well, maybe we need to rethink that and actually think, well –
do we have enough in reserve for a whole range of things?
And maybe we need to keep more in reserve onshore in things like jet fuel and crude oil.
That's, I think, going to be an ongoing discussion because I don't see the world becoming, even if these things settle down, the world in Iran settles down tomorrow.
