Well, I think the argument is that decriminalising all drugs, one has to ask, is that a wise move?
In other words, should we decriminalise the use of heroin and cocaine, for example?
I think it might be better for any country to start perhaps decriminalise cannabis, but then marry that with some form of legalising it and selling it and taxing it so that the state gets some benefit.
Well, I would say highly regulated, but we regulate alcohol.
And I think in order to pay for this, if you want a health-led drugs policy, it's expensive because it involves a lot of intervention, that you're far better off doing both sides, the supply and the demand, whereas the Citizens' Assembly, followed by the Oireachtas Committee, are basically on the demand side, the decriminalising all drugs for personal use.
But then, of course, it involves what does personal use mean?
That would have to be legislated for.
And what lies behind this?
And as we heard about the drug barons, is that this is an enormous industry.
And unless you do something about the supply, then you're not really tackling it.
So I would be, I would start experimenting, I think.
