In that book, there is a chapter by Kipling Williams on being ignored or excluded.

And it gives you a few reasons why it can hurt so much, which I wanted to share here because I thought it was really interesting and for me felt quite accurate based on the work that I do with clients, the conversations that I have, other reading that I've done, podcasts that I've listened to, all of the things.

It says that basically humans are built to notice when they're being left out.

In the past, being cut off from a group wasn't just uncomfortable, it could be dangerous.

So even today in the modern world, our brains still treat being ignored as something so important, something

It explains that being ignored hits our basic need, the need that we have as humans to feel included and noticed by other people.
We all want to feel like we matter to
others.

And when that feeling is disrupted or hurt in some way, it's going to feel painful.
