And Costa Rica, every man, woman and child in that country has the right to the access of something called a basic health team, a doctor, a nurse practitioner, a record keeper and two mobile sort of health ambassadors who are assigned about twenty five hundred families over the course of a year.
And they show up and they knock on your door.
And they have your health records.
And they actually talk to you if you're lonely or old or whatever.
They know who you are from last year.
They'll take your blood pressure.
If type 2 diabetes is indicated, they'll take a blood sample.
They will screen you for depression.
They'll go in your backyard and look for standing water where mosquitoes that bear infectious disease breed.
They'll go into your refrigerator and look what you've been eating lately.
And they'll often catch a disease 15 years before it shows up in the emergency room, costing somebody $100,000 to $150,000.
We don't do that in America.
Costa Rica spends one-fifteenth the amount we do on health care, and they have half the rate of middle-age mortality.
Costa Rica is not a place you want to go for a $2 million drug for a baby that has a rare condition or some nuclear medicine.
But when it comes to a compassionate, cost-effective way of mitigating suffering and premature death at the population level, they do it at least 15 times better than we do in the United States.
And we ought to be paying attention.
And what I do with my blue zone cities mimics, I spent a lot of time studying these basic health teams.
I've been to Costa Rica three times embedded with these basic health teams and it's working there.
It's working in Chile.
