Yes, well, if we think about defiance, if we look at the Oxford English Dictionary, its definition of defiance is to challenge the power of someone else openly and boldly.
And I'm not one to usually disagree with the Oxford English Dictionary.
As you said, I grew up in the UK, but I do think that definition is too narrow and it doesn't honour our agency.
So my definition of defiance is to defy is simply to act in accordance with your true values, especially when there is pressure to do otherwise.
So you take something that's really quite rare, negative and risky and transform it into something positive, meaningful, accessible and even pro-social.
And I thought it was helpful you told us what defiance is not.
So, you know, defiance is not like just being selfish.
Well, come help me with this.
Well, I don't feel like it.
So the power to say no when you're asked to do something, it's really just when you're asked to do something that conflicts with your values.
But society needs compliance, doesn't it?
Wouldn't we have anarchy without it?
Well, you know, to a certain extreme, yes.
But we're really talking about cooperation and we're talking about a society where we actually have too much compliance.
We are wired to comply.
And because of that, we don't defy when we need to, when the moment calls for it.
So if it goes back to defiance is acting in accordance with your values,
A lot of people will gladly tell you what their values are, so integrity, benevolence, they're not going to harm another person.
But then they find themselves in situations where they see some injustice or wrongdoing and they're not living up to their values by letting that bypass them.
