And so how can we speak up in those situations?
How can we do something when it really matters?
And to do that, we need to train for defiance the same way we've been trained
trained for compliance, we need to activate those neural pathways so we can say no when we have to.
I'm sure we want that from our children and our kids, not just to go along with their peers, but to be able to say no when it really matters.
That kind of leans into the next question.
You know, in your book, you say total compliance is fascism.
And...
You know, it reminded me that part of the book of the Bob Dylan song blowing in the wind.
You know, how many times can a man turn his head and pretend he just doesn't see?
And you use the example of Nazi Germany.
And a lot of us Americans, we look back.
There's no way we would have gone along with that if we lived in Germany.
If I was asked to be a guard at a concentration camp, there's no way I would have gone there.
There's no way I would have done that.
But you've done what's really helpful about reading your book is the amount of research and science that goes into some of the things that you describe.
You talk about, I think it's Milgram who did studies at Yale.
Can you describe for our listeners what that showed?
Absolutely.
So Stanley Milgram, he was really interested in whether that refrain that was heard from the Nazis after World War II, I was just following orders, whether this was a psychological reality for people or not.
