So he conducted these experiments in the early 1960s at Yale.

and he advertised the experiment as a sort of learning or memory experiment and he had people come in from the community to play the part of a learner or a teacher.

They were told that they would be randomized into their role.

In fact, all the participants were the teacher.

They met the learner who was just an actor and they saw that the learner getting strapped into what they thought was an electric chair.

It looked like an electric chair and they would receive electric shocks.

Actually, no electric shocks were given, but the teachers, the participants thought that they were being given.

They were brought to another room.

They were sat in front of a box that was marked

with different voltage levels starting from 5 volts going up in 15 volt increments all the way up to 450 volts, which was labeled XXX severe shock danger.

And what they had to do, the teacher was read out some word pairs to the learner in the other room.

If the learner got something wrong, then they would have to give them an electric shock and then keep moving up.

And what happened before was that Milgram and a group of psychiatrists predicted that less than 1% of people would go up all the way to 450 volts.

But what happened was that

Everyone pulled the lever for 150 volts.

Everyone pulled the lever for 300 volts where the man started pounding on the wall and then there was silence afterwards.

And 66% went all the way up to 450 volts.

That's something.

Not quite, we'll say so painful, but it was a really interesting story.
