Yes, so I trained as a physician in the UK, I actually worked in respiratory medicine as we call it in the UK or pulmonary medicine in the US and I'd come to the US and I was experiencing some chest pain that I had not experienced before and so I was worried about it and I ended up going to
the ER.
They ran a bunch of tests, including electrocardiogram.
Everything was fine and the pain was then subsiding.
So I thought I was going to be discharged.
And yet the doctor said to me that
before you go I just want you to have a CT scan and I said why and she said I just want to make sure you don't have a pulmonary embolism now a pulmonary embolism or a PE that's a blood clot in the lungs and as
I'd worked in medicine, in respiratory medicine, I know the type of pain that it causes.
It's a very sharp pain.
We call it pleuritic chest pain and it catches your breath when you breathe in and you breathe out.
That was not the type of pain I was having.
I didn't have any of the risk factors for a blood clot in the lungs and so I really didn't want this CT scan.
Now, it's still a low amount of radiation but it's
about four times more on average than an x-ray and why expose yourself to ionizing radiation when you don't need to it's not good for you and so I wanted to say no I had all the knowledge and understanding being a physician myself I should have said no and yet I found it incredibly difficult to do so I just didn't want to be the difficult patient I didn't want the doctor to think I would didn't trust them and so I ended up going along with it and I felt terrible that I did that in a
Environment which is actually supposed to be about informed consent and yet I found it so difficult to defy and say no So you use the term?
