maybe untrustworthy or incompetent or sexist or just plain wrong.
We find it very difficult to do that.
And because of this insinuation anxiety, we just hold back.
We remain silent and compliant because we don't want to send that negative signal to someone else.
It's very powerful.
can happen in life and death situations it could be why the nurses didn't speak up about errors and also some more mundane situations could be why you don't say no to your hairdresser when they're giving you a cut and it's going wrong and you want to say stop but you don't so in all sorts of situations i've heard so many stories about insinuation anxiety and and it is a very powerful force it is and i think it happens to people all the time and what i found very interesting
in the book and you describe how people are actually more likely to go along with somebody who is advising them when you know they have a conflict of interest even more likely to say yes because you don't want to imply you don't trust them because you know they have a conflict of interest i thought that was particularly interesting well we'll be back

Welcome back.
This is Dan Hesse and we are with Dr. Sunita Saul learning that defiance is living your true values when there is pressure to do otherwise.
So your body actually sends you signals on when to defy.
What are those signals?
Yes, I always say tension is your strength because this is actually the first stage of defiance, this warning that we get from our body.
So when we have pressure to go along with what somebody wants from us and we think the right thing to do is something else, we have those opposing forces, we feel tension.
And it can manifest in us in different ways for different people.
So some people will feel an unease in their stomach.
That tends to be what I feel.
Other people will get a dry mouth, a headache.
So it can represent itself in many different ways, but we should get familiar with how it feels within us.
