If you can't get physical distance, let's go for psychological distance.
So how can we do that?
We can just like, again, take a little pause, close our eyes and just think, you know, is this what I really want?
And talk to yourself in the third person.
So is this what you really want, Sunita?
because talking to yourself in the third person creates a psychological distance and it makes it easier for us to really determine what's right for us and decrease some of that emotion and intensity.
So call that the power of the pause.
That's one way to do it.
Don't make a decision straight away.
Just say you have to think about it and step out of the room.
You also describe true yes and kind of true no.
What are those?
Well, when we think about what compliance is, we often conflate it with consent.
We think they're the same thing when they're actually radically different.
And here I take the idea of informed consent in medicine, and we can use that framework for other important decisions in our lives.
And to have informed consent, you need five elements.
So the first one is capacity.
You need the mental, the cognitive capacity to do it.
So you should not be compromised by drugs, alcohol, sickness.
So capacity is the first one.
