The second one is knowledge.
You need the information about the decision that you're going to make.
But it's not enough just to have the information, the third element is understanding.
So you need a thorough grasp of the risks, the benefits and the alternatives.
So if you have the capacity, the knowledge, the understanding, the fourth element is the freedom to say no.
Because if you can't say no, it's merely compliance, it's not consent.
and then the fifth element is your authorization and if you want to say yes that's your true yes it's consent if you want to say no that's your dissent or your defiance your true no and
and both of those things consent and defiance are two sides of the same coin it's a thoroughly considered authorization that's an active expression of your deeply held values so it's something that's coming from within whereas if you think about compliance compliance is something external it's an order it's a suggestion it could even be expectations that society has brought up it's not consent
So if you're having second thoughts, doubts, or even if you've come to a true no in your mind, are there any tactics or phrases that people can use to, let's say, pump the brakes rather than like pulling the emergency lever?
I have a framework regarding the five stages of defiance, which can be an internal journey that we go through when we're thinking about how to defy.
And the first stage is that tension that I mentioned.
Often we disregard it, we think it's not worth our doubt, we think the other person knows better, but the second stage is really acknowledging that to yourself.
Like, what is it that's going on?
Why do I feel tension?
So acknowledging that there is tension here and figuring out why.
Then the third stage is escalating, vocalizing that tension to someone else.
That's a critical stage because if you can vocalize it, you're more likely to get to the fifth stage.
you can be in a deferential position here still.
So here are some phrases that you want to write out for yourself that are very natural to you.
So something like, what do you mean by that?
