And yet felt the necessity to leave America to have his dreams of being a great writer realized because it was not possible in America.
I think it will hold because people understand what is at stake.
And that we are at a crossroads and we have to make a choice because there are no sidelines in the current battle.
The requirement of we the people, of we citizens, is that we get engaged.
We mobilize.
We organize.
We be a part of something bigger than any one of us.
In some ways, it's a reformulation of FDR's Four Freedoms.
I gave those remarks when I received the FDR Medal from his foundation.
And as I was reflecting on the Four Freedoms,
It came to me that we talk about our freedoms and what we have a right to, but we don't talk about our responsibility and what we need to be accountable for as citizens.
And so, yes, I have a right to free speech, but I also have a responsibility to listen.
Doesn't mean I agree with you, but I can't just tell you I have a right to free speech and then say, but you don't have a right to be heard by me.
I have a right to freedom of religion.
but I'm not responsible to tolerate the fact that you may have a different religion.
And so for me, our freedoms come with responsibilities and come with accountability.
And if we only see freedom and the sort of selfishness that is a part of citizenship, then we have a problem.
