I came to philanthropy through the lens of the Rockefeller Foundation and Carnegie's 1889 Gospel of Wealth book.

And it's about generosity.
It's about charity.
It's about giving back.
Carnegie was the first of the industrialists to say, men like me and Rockefeller and Mellon, we should give back.
Dr. King said something else.
He said the following about philanthropy.
Philanthropy is commendable.
but it should not allow the philanthropist to overlook the economic injustice which makes philanthropy necessary.
And so what Dr. King was saying was something different.
He was saying philanthropy can't be just about generosity and charity.
Philanthropy should also be about
justice and dignity and that's a different engagement for the philanthropist.
And so what I tried to do was to write, to influence, to proselytize about this idea that we needed to get at the root causes.
Carnegie was radical and Rockefeller was radical.
It was radical in 1885 to say that every American should be literate.
which is what Carnegie said, that was pretty radical.
And so he built his libraries.
Now, he wasn't so radical that he said blacks and whites should use the same library and library books.
