He wasn't that radical.
There's that complicated history.
That's right.
So he was doing amazing things, but he let the local communities, when they got their Carnegie grant, decide how they were going to split that up so that they could have a library-
first-class library for the white citizens and then a second-class library with the used cast-offs of the larger library for blacks.
And so he wasn't getting at
the issues of racism.
He wasn't, when he gave money for scholarships, those scholarships to blacks were not for them to go east, they were to go to the black schools.
Now, that was still radical that he was supporting, but he wasn't getting at the root causes of some of the injustice and some of the inequality, which were deeply about race and class in America.
And so what Dr. King was saying is we have to get at that.
We have to look at our own culpability, wealthy people, for some of the very problems we are professing to want to solve.
Well, you got it then.
That was the goal, was to do that.
Well, it's not simply that.
It's that wealth and privilege, in part,
allows you to insulate yourself from the inconvenience and the vicissitudes of everyday life that most Americans have to deal with and cope with.
So part of it is about being comfortable.
You want to be wealthy because you will have comfort.
And part of that comfort is to not have to deal with
distasteful, unpleasant things that make you scream and make you feel bad or make you feel disquieted, which our history does and which engaging in things like
