Why do we invest in our investments in things that actually contribute to bad outcomes that then we use our philanthropy to say we want to solve?
And so my first book, A New Gospel of Wealth –
was taking Dr. King's ideas and putting the history of philanthropy going back to Carnegie through that analysis and updating it and saying, while that was radical and appropriate, we need a new idea of wealth and distribution for a new century.
Well, it's interesting that you say that.
I was recently in a session of CEOs and there was a module around which the moderator said, I'm sure many of you in this room
feel the imposter syndrome, that you have come into a job and you are overwhelmed by it, or you feel insufficient for the task.
And it was interesting because there was one other black CEO in the room, probably 30 white CEOs.
And they began talking about
how they felt overwhelmed, how they, and it was very interesting because I finally raised my hand and I said, I'm sorry, with all due respect and deep humility, I don't suffer from imposter syndrome.
I think any of us who are black and who have reached
The places we have reached are secure and know how hard we have worked and the demands that have been placed on us, sometimes fair and sometimes not.
And so if we are in that corner office or we are in the CEO chair, there's no doubt that we deserve it.
And so, again, with humility, of course, there are days when I feel a lot on my plate or my shoulders or – but I never feel that I'm not up to it or that I'm not worthy or that I don't have the credentials and the skills to do this.
There's no way I would be here if I didn't.
That doesn't mean I don't make mistakes because I do, that I –
sometimes find that I could have done this particular board meeting in a better way or whatever.
But I don't think I, I don't think you, I don't think Ken Chenault, I don't think Ken Frazier or Ursula Burns, any of us feel that we are suffering from some kind of imposter syndrome.
