to make his debut against the West Indies in the, when there must have been, what, late 80s, early 90s, early 90s, where they had people like Ambrose Walsh bowling ferocious paces, targeting him specifically because he was the new Wunderkid.
And that would have been the toughest debut to make.
Mine was against the Pakistan side, shorn of some of its big stars.
So it was sort of like playing a sort of test second XI in many ways, which would be a bit rude to some of the stars that were still in that team.
So his was against possibly the strongest opposition of all.
And you don't get a chance to ease yourself in.
So you don't get a chance to sort of have a couple of comparatively easy knocks to say, yes, I can play test cricket.
