Well, I think one way to think about this is to look at very, very briefly the history of the EU within Germany and the German relation.
The person who is most identified with the EU is Konrad Adenauer, the first chancellor of Germany.
And his obsession was Germany.
to make West Germany an anchor state of the Western Alliance, genuflecting to the United States.
Now a lot of EU federalists and European enthusiasts will say that the European Union was set up as a counterweight to the United States.
I steadfastly refuse to believe that.
I believe that the European Union was tolerated by the United States under the military umbrella of NATO,
which allowed the Europeans to begin the process of unifying as long as the Americans acquiesced to it.
Because if you look at what happened is the Americans were insistent that the Europeans wouldn't have their own proper defense.
and that the European Union would be a free market alliance openly trading with the United States, allowing American companies and American capital and American people to move freely between Western Europe and the United States across the Atlantic.
So the EU is really very much part of the Atlantic idea that the Americans imposed upon
Western Europe after the Second World War.
And Adenauer is completely fascinating because if you look at Adenauer, who's the man who built West Germany, right?
