He really didn't... I'll give you one amazing snippet.
In 1961, when the Berlin Wall was first mooted, Adenauer offered something extraordinary.
Adenauer said to the Americans that he would abandon West Berlin to the Russians.
if they could do a deal which would give, amazingly, given the area we're talking about, a swap of Saxony, Anhalt and Thuringia to central German provinces, to West Germany, abandoning Berlin to the Soviets.
And the reason he felt it, he didn't think there was any percentage in having Berlin.
He felt that Berlin was emblematic of the Prussian state
and that West Germany would be better off without Berlin.
So that shows you really how he was thinking about it.
And that, of course, has all come to light in subsequent papers, etc.
How would
with that?
Well, I think at the time, the German people went along with almost anything because they were so humiliated after the Second World War.
So I'll even give you an example.
The way in which they changed the currencies...
The Deutsche Mark came in in 1948.
The conversion rate was something extraordinary, which was that the savings of the average German people were wiped out by the emergence of the Deutsche Mark.
it was one Deutschmark to every 15 old Reichsmarks was the conversion rate.
So if you had 15 Reichsmarks, you only got one Deutschmark.
That meant that your savings were wiped out.
That was for people.
