That's equality.
But when we say equity, the person in the wheelchair,
cannot step on the stepping stool.
So we have to accommodate them.
So equity means making sure that everyone has a chance, a fair chance at opportunities to be successful in this country.
Inclusivity is the I.
This country from the onset, from the beginning, the inception of our country, the Constitution was written with one demographical group in mind, and that was the white male.
They were the only ones in the group signing the Constitution and making those laws.
What we have with inclusivity is to bring everyone to the table because we are dealing with a system that was exclusive from the beginning.
It did not want to include Black people.
It did not want to include women.
It didn't want to include those with a disability.
So inclusivity is bring everyone to the table
and allow them to be a part of the conversation, not just inviting me to the party after you've planned it.
Maybe I want to attend the party.
So that's the I. And then the A is, again, accessibility and ensuring accommodations for those who have disabilities.
Now, within the Biden-Harris administration, specifically with me at the Department of Labor, what we did, DEIA, was not just the recruitment and the hiring of diverse workers and employees.
What we wanted to do was ensure that the federal workforce, through Executive Order 14035, that that workforce looked like the American people we were serving.
Statistics show us that when you are serving people, they want to trust
in those who are providing these services.
