Okay, so it's the story, the people basically who are unmarried are increasingly unhappy in a lot of different research that I'm seeing.
And then we're also seeing too from a new study at Yale that reports of suicidal thoughts steady for married Americans from two thousand eight, but growing for unmarried Americans.
So kinda just suggests that there's something about our our context, especially in the last
Fifteen years.
that is leading to a kind of emotional gap between married and unmarried Americans.
Quick
Question for the audience, what do you think's happened the last 15 years to kind of push unmarried Americans in a more negative emotional direction?
Would you guess?
Yeah, so smartphones I think social media are are kind of uh making a lot of us miserable, but especially folks who don't have like the the community of a spouse.
Yeah, so I think in terms of like helping college students just understand and appreciate how much um, for instance, you know, socialization has dropped, you know, in the last fifteen years.
So there was about twelve hours devoted by young adults to in-person socializing, doing things like this, for instance, tonight.
Um and that's gone down to five hours per week, you know, more recently.
So if you can kind of kind of reverse engineer, I think, things to sort of try to figure
out ways to you know host parties, to host events like this, to play, you know, soccer or throw the frisbee.
to, you know, introduce new religious devotionals as, you know, part and parcel of the the campus life at a place like Malone, for instance, you you can kind of work to sort of
Turn that digital kind of effect.
off if you s in in a sense and help people to become more sort of social and cultivate both the skills and the experiences that will lead to friendship and then also obviously in some cases to to dating and and to marriage down the road.
So we just have to figure out kind of newer ways
to um get people socializing in person.
Um and that's part of what I think can help us kind of reverse some of these trends when it comes to love, dating and marriage.
