But first I just want to take apart this myth that really gets my go that fascism somehow ended in nineteen forty five.
It doesn't make sense that fascism as a system of government can only exist historically.
Otherwise we would say democracy can't exist because we're not in ancient Athens.
It's just a system, it's just a form of government.
It's a particularly objectionable one if you're a right thinking moral person.
But to understand what that system is and recognise it means that we can tackle it, it means we can understand it better as scholars, we can help policy makers understand it, and we can do work like this podcast where we go in and talk into the public and try to explain what we're thinking.
And so for us
Fascism isn't just about destruction.
This is not just a system of hate.
Destruction and hatred are important elements of fascism.
But when we read
most modern scholarship, I and I would say this is an understanding of fascism that has been evolving for about thirty to forty years in the scholarship now and it's pretty much agreed upon, with differentiations around the edges, 'cause scholars love to quibble about details.
That's what we do.
Fascism is a political force that simply says
Our nation is somehow degenerated.
It is sick, it is ill, it is infected with something, usually something that comes from the outside, not from within us.
We need to solve this problem.
We need to rejuvenate the nation.
Therefore, there is a sense of futurity about this.
We're always thinking about what comes after the destruction.
