And what we're learning is less than half the people that take them continue.
And when they stop, the medications stop working, and most people regain that.
And so it's so sad to see someone lose 20, 25, 30% of their weight, and they gain it back.
So for those reasons, my co-author Holly White and I decided to
This was the perfect time to write the book about weight loss maintenance that we've already always wanted to write, but the timing wasn't right.
I think now it is.
So, Wendy, we did some work many years ago with Tom Wyden and Gary Foster, who you know well.
And they started this whole thing of simply asking people who started a weight loss program what their goal was.
And the long and short of it is people would be happy with about 25% weight loss.
Well, with behavioral programs, we can produce 10, 12, maybe 15.
So we weren't reaching that goal.
With the medications, and especially the new ones that are coming along, people are losing 20, 25, even 30% of their body weight.
So people are reaching their goals, and we couldn't do that with lifestyle.
So that's why I welcome the medications.
But also, and I know we're going to talk about this, I don't think the medications alone is the answer.
It's medication plus lifestyle.
Yes, that's the key.
If there's one thing for people to take away with this, the knowledge and skills necessary to keep weight off are different than those to lose weight.
And let me give you some examples.
You know this, and the data is showing right now that you can lose weight on any diet you want.
