So that's one of my first um mysteries to solve.
And a lot of times that mystery can be solved by other mental health issues.
So we know anxiety can look a lot like ADHD at times.
Um, so for example, when I'm anxious about something, and I even think about it in terms of working on my own dissertation several years ago, you know, if I'm anxious about something, the natural emotional reaction to that, the behavioral reaction is to avoid.
Because if I avoid, the anxiety goes down, at least for that moment.
Now it's gonna ramp it back up when I have to actually do the work and I'm behind.
But that initial anxiety leads to avoidance, which can look like inattention a lot of the time.
So if you have someone who
is in maybe a new job or they're, you know, uh exploring a new
uh graduate program or something along those lines and there's a lot of anxiety there, that can lead to a lot of inattention.
Um depression uh is uh similar in the sense that we know depression leads to lack of motivation and withdrawal and uh can even look like ADHD when we're doing um brain brain imaging, uh looking at neuropsychological functions.
functioning.
Um and so depression can also look a lot like ADHD.
Um and the tricky thing with all of this is that we know that also anxiety and uh depression are happen
concurrently with ADHD a lot.
So sometimes I'll hear people say like, well it can't be ADHD because they're anxious.
It's like, well, it could be an and rather than an or situation.
So we have to take that into account as well.
Um, but other things that we'll see too, you know, burnout, like someone who's been working very hard, working to establish a career, functioning at a very high level for a very long time, sometimes might hit a wall and it might just be that they are tired and and need some time.
Um, so those are things that can look like ADHD, uh, but might not necessarily be ADHD.
