So going to my work with teachers, I want you to think about the best day you ever had in the classroom.

I want you to think about the worst day you ever had in the classroom.

You can apply this to any setting.

Immediately thereafter, I gave the teachers the exact same essay to grade.

And my question was, would there be differences in how the teachers evaluated the exact same essay just after thinking for five minutes about a good day versus a bad day?

Of course not.

All I do all day long is grade papers and make decisions.

So what this tells us is that our emotions are guiding us through the day, and oftentimes...

what's happening is we're making a judgment based on the mood we're in that's not necessarily the best judgment.

Now, what's the antidote to allow our emotions to subconsciously influence our judgments?
