We think of it as a mutually exacerbating condition.
Um, so if you're not sleeping, um you're gonna be tired and irritable uh and maybe hyperactive the next day than you than you would be.
And really the the challenge is that many of our treatments for ADHD, the medications affect sleep adversely.
So I think that sleep is something that needs first of all to be evaluated
As part of a diagnostic evaluation for ADHD, you want to rule out if they have a primary sleep disorder.
So if for example, if a child is snores or is overweight or wakes up a lot or is noisy, you want to have them evaluated first um to make sure they don't have obstructive sleep apnea or another primary sleep disorder.
Um and then um you want to monitor sleep, uh sleep behaviors throughout treatment, throughout different phases of treatment.
And it varies as you get uh uh you know, with age and as you get older.
But um you know, thinking about the adolescents that have um uh school that starts starts very early and if they do do a a um
A sport, what time they get up.
Uh and then the impact of uh variable sleep schedules, which is really poor.
Uh Route Dr.
Root Gruber has done some really important research showing that if you just restrict sleep for an hour.
Um so they had kids and they had them um have w an hour less sleep.
their executive functioning and their motion regulation was much worse.
Um
And uh again, uh paying attention to that 24-hour clock and looking for consistency and kind of putting the person with ADHD in the best position to do well uh means getting good sleep.
And um uh again, this is the fractionated care.
Um people tend to do things on their own.
The their primary care physician may not focus on it, or their mental health provider may not have that um
