The biggest lesson I've learned from treatment of ADHD is that we have medicines that help with symptoms, but we really need to focus on skills and skill building.
And also emphasized strengths.
Um the symptoms get in the way.
And um they fluctuate.
But when you build up someone's strengths, um, I think that's that's what we're best at and we have the best chance of succeeding in life.
And um I I I discourage people to focus on ADHD the disorder, but really to focus on building up what their strengths are.
And uh yeah, so I just think that that's really important.
Well I hope I'm doing it the right way.
So so um what I usually do when I'm doing an evaluation
Um, after hearing what the families uh or individuals' concerns are and what they'd like to make better, uh I always ask, what are you good at and what do you like to do?
Um and I think it's important for them to identify it and the people around them.
Uh and um and even w even working with schools, I think it's important to emphasize that.
Yeah, I was gonna say I say I learned that from um my pediatric colleagues.
So psychiatrists and psychologists tend to focus on pathology and DSM and and symptoms.
And when I started an ADHD clinic um at when I was at the University of Chicago, I had a pediatric colleague.
And she taught me how important it was to assess strengths and really focus on adaptive functioning life skills, uh, which is something that many people with ADHD are really weak in.
and developing an adaptive prescription for them, um, I think is is a very important part of treatment.
