It's not as messy as going into people's home and measuring them.

So we could control everything.

We had like a noise-free control, but they were just sleeping.

We were obviously measuring their sleep with so-called polysomnography with electrodes on the scalp, next to the eyes, on the muscles.

Exactly.

So that we can actually, you know, look at this sleep architecture.

And then there was a night with just pink noise.

There was a night just with, you know, environmental noise that was like aircraft noise events, drones, cars, trains, but also the crying baby.

and the fire alarm.

And then there was a combination of pink noise and traffic noise and also a night with earplugs and the environmental noise.

So all sorts of different combinations trying to disentangle what do the different sounds do to sleep.

So the environmental, the intermittent environmental sounds on their own, they were destroying the deep sleep, right?

So you had like more than 20 minutes loss of deep sleep and we gave them an eight hour sleep opportunity.

The pink noise on its own was kind of destroying REM sleep.

So we had like 19 minutes less REM sleep.

And then, I mean, if you put the two together, you can already, you know, kind of think, is it really a good idea?

Because yes, lo and behold, if we put the two together, we had the deep sleep reduction through the environmental noise and the REM sleep reduction through the pink noise.

And overall, they were also spending more time awake.

Now, the pink noise actually did help a little bit with the deep sleep reduction through the environmental noise.

And it did help a little bit, you know, that people would not wake up as much due to the intermittent environmental noise.
