So it's to develop enough experience approaching others that you actually calibrate your beliefs.

And it's important not to confuse different types of social interaction.

So statisticians sometimes refer to this as confusing the conditional.

probabilities, outcomes are conditional on what kind of context that you are in, which means that the outcomes are different depending on the context that you are in.

So when somebody approaches you, that person, the outcome of that kind of interaction is

might be different than what happens if you were to randomly select somebody to talk to yourself.

A person who approaches you on the streets of New York or San Francisco might want something from you.

And the outcome of those interactions are going to be different than what happens when you randomly reach out to somebody else.

You can confuse those two things, right?

So often when I talk about our research, people will say, but yeah,

People come up to me all the time and it's kind of terrible, right?

It can be terrible, right?

That could be, right?

There's a selection bias for the kind of people who are approaching you and that's different, right?

And that's what we're studying, right?

We're trying to understand what is it that's keeping you

from choosing to be social and connect with people in ways that would actually, are data fine, be more rewarding than you would likely expect them to be.

It's those expectations that are creating barriers, but it's important to understand we're talking about cases where you have a choice to reach out and engage or to hold back, and you're making that choice.

Our research, I think, is fundamentally empowering that way because it highlights your margin for improving your life and making choices a little bit differently.
