I mean, you can imagine really bad conversation starters.

Like you're not going to start a conversation with that, right?

We can certainly imagine them.

But among the conversation starters that we would often use...

Asking deeper questions tends to be better than shallower ones, but mostly the big barriers, we don't choose to start them at all.

Yeah.

There are contexts where it is hard to go deeper, like at a party when you're around a lot of other people, you just don't have time.

That's just not a context that allows for that kind of conversation.

So there, it's a little harder to make that choice.

But maybe your husband's sitting on the couch with a beer with his buddy.

That's a context where you can do that.

And in those contexts where you've got

time, you're in a dyadic interaction, just a conversation with another person, then we can choose to go deeper if we try.

And a lot of people believe that there are like magic words that they can use and that they don't know what those words are.
