And we find this in everything from casual conversations on buses and trains and in cabs and waiting rooms to having deep and meaningful conversations with somebody.
talking about really serious stuff, to reaching out and expressing gratitude or passing along a compliment or asking somebody for help or being honest in our relationship.
We find over and over again that when we reach out to engage with somebody in a positive way that could create a meaningful connection, we tend to be overly pessimistic and therefore don't do it as much as we would imagine.
And it not only makes us feel good,
better to be connected with somebody else, of course it makes other people feel better to be connected to us as well, right?
Aristotle said that life is essentially worth living because we have friends, for without friends, no one would choose to live.
And essentially what we're finding is life's better when you treat other people as if they're friends.
We just don't seem to anticipate that beforehand.
Yeah.
Yeah, I think it's a really important hypothesis and one that comes to you if you are a researcher that might not occur to you otherwise.
Social connection isn't something that just happens to us.
It's a choice.
It's a choice we make that we make over and over again over the course of our day, not just once, not twice, but many times where we have the choice to reach out and engage with somebody.
Could be a little way, like when I was walking around your neighborhood on the way to do this podcast today, right?
I'm saying hi to people when I'm walking down the sidewalk, smiling, saying hello, talking to the construction guys who are putting in new curbs in the neighborhood, right?
Little moments like that to bigger opportunities where you could reach out and call an old friend or talk to a parent or a family member, have a deep conversation with somebody.
Over the course of our days, we have many opportunities to reach out and engage with people that we often choose not to take.
And that belief part,
of social isolation is easy to overlook.
It's easy to imagine that, you know, these phones are making us lonely, but notice we're choosing to use them.
